AP Spanish Language and Culture
This course is comparable in content and difficulty to a 4th semester college course and will develop studets’ proficiency in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communication in Spanish through oral activities, detailed reading / listening and purposeful essay writing. It also increases student understanding of the products, practices and perspectives of Spanish speaking cultures though a variety of authentic sources. This course will include daily homework and outside reading. Instruction is exclusively in the target language as required by the College Board. It is highly recommended that students take the Advanced Placement exam in May. Those who show themselves qualified on the AP exam may receive advanced placement and/or credit at many colleges and universities.
AP Spanish Literature and Culture
Highly motivated students are challenged through the advanced study of authentic Spanish literature of moderate to high difficulty and mature content from the Middle Ages to present times, and from various Spanish speaking countries, as per the College Board required reading list. Students will become skilled readers, do literary analysis and express oral and written critical opinions and judgments about Spanish novels, plays, and poetry. Instruction is exclusively in the target language as required by the College Board. It is highly recommended that students take the Advanced Placement examination in May. Those who show themselves qualified on the AP exam in May may receive advanced placement and/or credit at many colleges and universities.
SPANISH 1-2
Students learn basic content and communication skills in listening, reading, and writing in the target language as stated in the State of California Standards for World Language, Stage 1. Course emphasizes listening and speaking activities as well as an awareness of the cultural products, practices, perspectives and social conventions of the target culture. Instruction is primarily in the target language as emphasized in the State of California Foreign Language Framework and Standards.
SPANISH 3-4
Students continue learning content and developing the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing as stated in the State of California Standards for World Language, Stage 2. Course emphasizes listening and speaking activities as well as an awareness of the cultural products, practices, perspectives and social conventions of the target culture. Students prepare to use the language appropriately in real-life situations. Instruction is primarily in the target language as emphasized in the State of California Foreign Language Framework.
SPANISH 5-6
Students continue learning content, developing / enhancing integrated skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language, as stated in the State of California Standards for World Language, Stage 3. Greater emphasis is placed on reading, writing, and interpretation of literature and using the language appropriately in real-life situations. Course content emphasizes the transition from a colloquial to a more formal command of the target language, and expects a high level of communication proficiency and appreciation of the products, practices and perspectives of Spanish speaking cultures. Instruction is primarily in the target language as stated in the State of California Foreign Language Framework.
SPANISH 7-8
An advanced course which will continue to expand the students’ vocabulary and include more emphasis on the ability to communicate at an advanced level of Spanish, as stated in the State of California Standards for World Languages, Stage 4. More emphasis is placed on comprehension and analysis of print, audio and audio-visual sources, and effective discussion of the products, practices and perspectives of Spanish speaking cultures. At the conclusion of this class, students should be able to communicate at an advanced-intermediate level and be prepared for AP courses. Instruction is exclusively in the target language as stated in the State of California Foreign Language Framework.
SPANISH IB HL
This course is comparable in content and difficulty to a 4th semester college course and will develop students’ proficiency in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communication in Spanish through oral activities, detailed reading / listening and purposeful writing of a variety of text types. The course develops and increases students’ understanding of the products, practices and perspectives of Spanish speaking cultures through reading, listening and viewing of a variety of authentic texts in the target language. This course will include daily homework and outside reading. Instruction is exclusively in the target language as required by the IBO. Students are highly encouraged to take all parts of the IB exam. Those who show themselves qualified on the IB HL exam may receive advanced placement and/or credit at many colleges and universities.
SPANISH IB SL

SPANISH/SPANISH SPKRS 1/2
This course is intended for students who are semi-fluent in Spanish as a heritage language and who may have some schooling in the language. Students may or may not be able to read and write in Spanish with limited proficiency. Students begin and/ or continue developing and improving integrated skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Course content also emphasizes the transition from a colloquial to a more formal command of the Spanish language through a variety of authentic print, audio and audio visual texts, as well as an understanding of the products, practices and perspectives of Spanish speaking cultures.
SPANISH/SPANISH SPKRS 3/4
This course is intended for students who have some formal schooling in Spanish; they are literate and fluent enough to have basic proficiency in reading and writing in Spanish. Students will continue developing and improving integrated skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Course content has transitioned from a colloquial to a more formal command of the Spanish language through a variety of authentic print, audio and audio visual texts, and elicits an appreciation of the products, practices and perspectives of Spanish speaking cultures.
SPANISH/SPANISH SPKRS 5/6
This course is intended for students who are literate and fluent in reading and writing in Spanish. Students continue developing and improving integrated skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Course content demands a formal command of the Spanish language and is introduced via a variety of authentic print, audio and audio visual texts, focusing on literary texts of moderate-high difficulty and mature content. It requires understanding, appreciation and analysis of the products, practices and perspectives of Spanish speaking cultures. This course prepares students for AP Spanish Language or Literature and Culture and IB Spanish.
SPANISH/SPANISH SPKRS 7/8
This course is a continuation of Spanish for Spanish Speakers 5-6. Students continue developing and improving integrated skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish to a higher degree. Course content demands a formal command of the Spanish language and is introduced via a variety of more complex level of authentic print, audio and audio visual texts. Focus is on literary texts of moderate-high difficulty and mature content. It requires understanding, appreciation and deeper analysis of the products, practices and perspectives of Spanish speaking cultures. This course prepares students for AP Spanish Language or Literature and Culture and IB Spanish.
